So today my "English Counselor" came to view me teach a class. I had told the kids before hand, of course. I wasn't sure how they would behave, because this was my fourth grade class we're talking about. But they were very good. They actually stood up when she entered and responded to her greeting. I used more English than I generally do in class, and the kids noticed and some even commented.
Personally, I thought the lesson itself was okay - I had a song, we differentiated between farm animals and zoo animals and I didn't quite teach the word "pet".
As I sat with her afterwards, my face got grimmer and grimmer. Firstly, she could tell I was tired and commented on the fact. Was it the travel? My boyfriend? (I didn't bother to tell her I haven't one.) The job preparation? I should have an English corner in the class. I should have given them a worksheet. I should have joined the three independent learners in with the class when I teach a song. I should smile more. I should use more visual aids. etc...
The fun part was when she had left and it was just me and my class. There was such a feeling of togetherness. The boy she had sat next to was making a fuss and telling everyone of his experience. I apologized to him, and told him she had been very impressed with him. One of my smart students wanted to know why it was she had asked him if he found the class difficult - he was offended by the question. The class wanted to know if she was going to be present in the next lesson, and was pleased to hear that she wouldn't be. Only one kid was upset; now the class wouldn't be as quiet. One child wanted to know if she was British.
During the hour I was talking to her, there was supposed to be a sub. teacher for one of my third grade classes. In the end they had a free period. Later on that day those students saw me, and they were curious to know where I had been and why they hadn't had English - all this even thought they had had a free hour... I like that.
